Denis Pascal performs in France and throughout the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He has made numerous appearances in the United States (Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, Herbst Theater in San Francisco…) in Asia (Yokohama Festival in Japan, Seoul…) and in Europe (Palermo, Rome, Venice, Lisbon, Helsinki, Liepaja, Madrid, Valencia…). He is regularly invited in Germany to the prestigious Husum Piano Festival, where he performs the most audacious programmes. In France, in Paris, he has been applauded by audiences at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Théâtre de la Ville, the Salle Gaveau and the Opéra Garnier, as well as at numerous international festivals.
He has performed with the national orchestras of Lyon, Bordeaux, Besançon, Toulouse and the Orchestre d’Auvergne. His concerts are well thought out. Concerned with maintaining a historical awareness of the repertoire, he often leaves the beaten track and gives concerts that are both striking and open to all, rigorously applying a consistent ethic to the Liszt repertoire as well as to impressionist music and post-romantic scores.
This singular approach to all areas of the piano repertoire, as well as his ardour for defending the rarer works and composers, make him one of the most outstanding artists on the French and international scene. Denis Pascal’s discography reflects his musical commitments. For the French label Polymnie, he has recorded the complete Hungarian Rhapsodies by Franz Liszt, whose expressive force has been unanimously acclaimed by the musical press, including a Choc du Monde de la Musique, the Prix de l’Association Française Franz Liszt, and the “Recommended” by Classica.
He recorded Ernest Chausson’s Concert for violin, string quartet and piano, which was enthusiastically received by the critics. Shortly afterwards, his collaboration with François-Xavier Roth’s orchestra Les Siècles in the two Chopin concertos renewed our vision of the sounds of these emblematic works – Pleyel 1900 piano and period instruments. Among the discographic projects that have received enormous critical acclaim is a monographic disc devoted to Jean Wiener for Sisyphe, which was awarded a Diapason d’Or.
In October 2012 a new volume devoted to the chamber music of Jean Wiéner will be released, and in 2013 a recording of Schubert’s Moments musicaux and Sonate D.960 will be released.A disciple of Pierre Sancan, he studied at the CNSM in Paris with Jacques Rouvier, Léon Fleisher and Gyorgy Sandor. He won international competitions in Lisbon, New York and Zurich, and immediately left to study with György Sebök at Indiana University in Bloomington for three years.
Denis Pascal was appointed professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon in January 2010 and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in April 2011. He has also contributed to the elaboration of several didactic works in collaboration with the Cité de la Musique in Paris. He is at the origin of several musical seasons, including the highly successful “Les Tons Voisins” season – International Chamber Music Meetings in Albi. Unanimously praised by the press, this season takes place in the most unexpected places of this city recently classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
